Batian Characteristics  Batian is an interesting variety. Because it combines the best of both worlds. It is resistant to CBD and CLR. - Major diseases are Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR), Hemileia vastatrix; Coffee Berry Disease (CBD), Colletotrichum kahawae Provides farmers a high yield; with a plant density of 1900 trees per hectare. The ripening of cherries is much quicker than the traditional varieties. The bean size is bigger than other Kenyan varieties. And the quality is high;  competing with the likes of SL28 and SL34. Batian was created via single-tree selections from fifth filial generations from the male parent of some Ruiru 11progenies. Batian is a composite variety, mixing three different pure line varieties. The varieties involved in the original crosses are: SL28, SL34, Rume Sudan, N39, K7), SL4 and the Timor Hybrid. Furthermore, the Batian holds the potential to become Kenya’s most wanted variety but it’s very sensitive to acidic soils.
